Technology Transfer

Technology Transfer

In July 2006, the Juneau (Alaska) Economic Development Council, through a Partnership Intermediary Agreement (PIA), became a partner with the U.S Department of Defense's Office of Technology Transition. There are five other PIAs in the United States doing similar work.

The Department of Defense (DoD) has been transferring technology to the private sector since the early 1900's when Thomas Edison and the Navy created the first Department of Defense research laboratory. Many of these technologies have shaped commercial industry today. The computer, microelectronics and the Internet owe their existence to cutting edge research funded by the DoD to meet military requirements.

SpringBoard is a component of the Juneau Economic Development Council, a nonprofit corporation based in Alaska. SpringBoard and the Department of Defense are partners for this work.

"In accordance with Congressional statutes and Department of Defense (DOD) policy, technology transfer is a responsibility for our science and engineering professionals who are encouraged to partner with the private and public sectors in activities that are mutually beneficial. Technology transfer activities are integral elements of the Air Force's pursuit of its national security mission and, concurrently, these activities improve the economical, environmental, and societal well being of the citizens of the United States. Technology transfer enhances the economic competitiveness of industry and promotes the productivity of state and local governments while leveraging DOD R&D investment. The technology transfer program includes spin-off, dual use, and spin-on activities that make the best possible use of national scientific and technical capabilities to enhance the effectiveness of the Air Force while also contributing to the domestic economic competitiveness of industry"
